Hospice is not a place. It is a special kind of care focused on keeping the resident comfortable once the resident and physician have decided that the underlying disease can no longer be treated or cured. Hospice is helpful not only to the resident, but also their family, friends and caregivers as well. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death and is focused on the belief that quality of life is as important as length of life. Hospice staff members help manage pain and other symptoms and provide emotional and spiritual support to residents and their families so they can make the most of each day. There are many Hospice programs in the Portland area to choose from. Hospice requires a physician referral.
